From Shop Lights to Studio Magic: My Journey with Photography Lighting

Learning more about lighting equipment is a challenge but so much fun! Over the years, I’ve experimented with everything from budget-friendly finds to professional-grade equipment. My lighting gear ranges from a $20 work light from Home Depot to my latest purchase, the impressive Aputure Amaran 150c LED light.

When I was just getting started, I couldn’t afford expensive lighting gear, so I made do with what I could find. One of my earliest purchases was a basic shop light from Home Depot that I modified with a plastic table cloth, and a super cheap softbox. With these I was able to create soft, diffused light that elevated my shoots. It’s proof that you don’t need to break the bank to create beautiful images—you just need a bit of creativity and resourcefulness! In fact, I still use my trusty old softbox and modified Home Depot light.

As my photography evolved, so did my gear. This year, I was thrilled to add the Aputure Amaran 150c to my setup. This light is a game-changer! Its LED color-changing features have opened up so many creative possibilities in my studio. I love being able to play around with color during my shoots. It’s an investment, sure, but the versatility and quality it offers have made it worth it.

I’ve also been venturing into outdoor shoots with my GODOX AD100Pro Pocket Studio Flash. It’s amazing how much power this tiny flash packs. It’s small enough to fit in my pocket but delivers professional-grade results, especially when I need that extra pop of light outdoors. It’s perfect for adding creative lighting effects or highlighting subjects in natural light.

Another handy addition to my lighting kit is the Altura Photo AP-305C Flash for Canon. It’s a solid, affordable choice for on-camera flash photography. I love using it for events or quick portrait sessions where I need reliable and balanced lighting.

One thing that often gets overlooked when investing in lighting equipment is all the extra accessories you need. Even when you finally purchase that dream light, you’ll still need softboxes, heavy-duty stands, clamps, and other tools to make the most of it. It can feel like a never-ending process, but each piece of equipment plays a role in achieving that perfect shot.

Lighting equipment can be incredibly expensive and confusing, but I’m excited to keep experimenting and sharing the results with all of you!
