Crafty Props: Turning Everyday Items into Photoshoot Gold
As a photographer, I love building a photoshoot around a fun prop. It adds texture, movement, and personality while giving the model something to interact with. Plus, props make it easy to get an editorial look without spending a lot!
Since I love to craft, my house is full of random supplies just waiting to be used. Fabric, fake flowers, mylar film, streamers, feathers, bold makeup, fun wardrobe pieces; I've even used a real knife once! These little treasures inspire me and keep test shoots budget-friendly.
One of my favorite shoots was all about a flowing fabric I’d had for years. I teamed up with a photographer friend and an amazing model with a dance background. We planned the lighting, wardrobe, and poses, and our model brought a few great pieces while I added a gorgeous black dress. The fabric became its own character, adding drama and elegance as it flowed with every movement. The energy was amazing, and the shots turned out beautifully!
The best part? Props make every shoot exciting and dynamic. Whether it's a thrift store find, something hidden in your closet, or a DIY piece, props open the door to fresh, creative ideas. So next time you’re planning a shoot, look around—you might already have the perfect inspiration right in front of you!
