A Stunning Lakeside Shoot with the Godox Pro100: My New Favorite Flash
There’s something amazing about shooting outdoors by the water, especially when you have the right tools to bring that magic to life.
I recently did an outdoor portrait photoshoot by the lake, and I couldn’t wait to put my new Godox Pro100 to the test. Spoiler alert: it delivered.
Lilian, my model was someone I met at the Park City Fashion Week Fashion Show. She’s so gorgeous, graceful, and genuinely one of the sweetest people I’ve worked with. We were joined by the incredibly talented Ellie Gadalla on makeup, who gave us a timeless glam that looked amazing against the moody sky. We all talked about locations together and settled on this perfect location by Utah Lake!
It was one of those dreamy, overcast evenings, gloomy in the best way. We started with natural light just before sunset, taking advantage of that soft, diffused glow. And I just died when when we started using the flash! MAGICAL!!
The Godox Pro100 is tiny and is expensive, I waited for a sale and it was pretty worth it. It’s compact, barely bigger than a soup can but super powerful! Once the sun dipped below the horizon and the sky turned that deep, rich blue hour, I fired up the flash and fell in love. I usually kept it between 1/30 and 1/16 power, adjusting based on how quickly the light was fading and how far away I kept the flash from my model.
For an on-location portrait photographer in Utah, having a flash this portable and this powerful is amazing. It slid right into my bag, battery charged and ready to go—no more digging around for extra AAs. I love the rechargeable battery, the built-in modeling lamp, the high-speed sync, and the clean, round light it produces. It's everything I need, and nothing I don’t.
It is expensive, I waited for a sale and I’m sure you could find it used. But since adding this to my gear, it’s been my go-to light. Whether I’m shooting at golden hour to replicate the sun, or midday to fill shadows on a client’s face, it’s consistently reliable and powerful. And honestly, it just makes my life easier. Fewer batteries, fewer compromises, more creativity.
This lakeside shoot reminded me exactly why I love what I do. I get to blend storytelling photography with technology that actually supports my vision. Whether I’m shooting digital photography in Salt Lake City, doing outdoor portrait photography in Utah, or building a full editorial fashion photographer set from scratch, this little flash is staying in my bag.
